Description

Folio 56. From W [William] King. To Charles Halsted at the Cocoa Tree, Pall Mall, London. Place: St Mary Hall, Oxford.

My brother [sic] heads are grown less violent and treat my friends with more temper and humanity out of an apprehension (I believe) that their former irregular conduct would necessarily have occasioned a petition which ?as they prosecuted this affair had been absolutely necessarily in order to have redressed our grievances. Mr Ffoulkes [Thomas Foulkes], whom Mr Philips [Edward Phelips] presented to a living [Yeovil with Preston Plucknett] in Somersetshire last year and whose character you demanded of me is one of the greatest enemies I have notwithstanding he has now no dependence on the College being married and married too to the sister of a very particular friend of mine. There is one Mr Noble of Queen's [College] who lives at York a Commoner Master who I am assured would come up to serve me at the request of any friend of yours there and I think you mentioned a gentleman who lives there with whom Mr Noble is well acquainted. I can find a way to make Mr Sympson's vote good and in that case I believe I may depend upon it but I would be glad that you speak to him. I'll endeavour very shortly to make up my accounts with you. You shall hear from me again in a post or two'. Seized letter.
