Folios 41-43. From Jn [John] Smith. To King George l.
Petition of Marguerite and Lucie Smith, widow and daughter of the late Captain Nicholas Smith, to His Majesty, asking that the Treasurer of the Admiralty may be ordered to pay them what was owed to the late captain. The petitioner and the captain got married in 1701, but the captain tried to annul the marriage in 1713; the court ruled in favour of the petitioner and decided that the marriage was valid in 1717; the captain was ordered to pay £300, but he never did, and left his wife and daughter without money, hiding until his death last December in a place called 'la Minte' [Mintes, at Blue Ball Court in the Mint near ?Mint Street]. Note on the back of the letter: petition to the same effect put into the Council Office and rejected.
