Administrative / biographical background

Sir John Major was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in October 1989 after Nigel Lawson's resignation. Major delivered his first Autumn Statement on 15 November 1989 and he presented only one Budget which was also the first one to be televised live on 20 March 1990.
