In October 2005, the National Blood Authority (which managed the National Blood Service) and UK Transplant were merged to form the National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). The NHSBT is a Special Health Authority sponsored by the Department of Health. The NHSBT manages blood donations (through NHS Blood Donations) transplantation services, diagnostic and therapeutic services. It also conducts clinical trials and produces research.
