Folio 154. Solomon de Medina Moses Son and Abraham de Medina of London merchants, to the King'. Petition for an order for the delivery to them of a large quantity of snuff seized by Captain [Mathew] Norris of HMS Laystoff [Lowestoffe] from the 'Old Beaver', Captain Mathew Smith master, lying at anchor in the port of New York. Norris seized the snuff 'on pretence of having Letters of Reprisal and that the snuff belonged to the King of Spain' [Philip V]. The petitioners say that the snuff 'was actually paid for long before the hostilities were committed before Gibraltar'. [Note HMS Lowestoffe was on the New York station between 1725 and 1728 when she was ordered home].
