Petition of the Chevalier William Lowther Baronet to the King [George I] complaining about one James Ibbetson a merchant of Leeds appointed a Justice of the Peace 'about a year and half ago a man of low birth who does not comport himself well and has insulted Lowther and opposes the King's interests'. Lowther served the late King William and Queen Anne, and now His Majesty, as member of the Parliament and Justice of the Peace; 'he is so good at his job that a thousand people are willing to come forward and support his case if need be'.
