Folio 84. 'A memorial on behalf of Sir Wm [William] Keith, done by a person who resided some years in North America being well acquainted with his character'. 'Sir William Keith's conduct and behaviour during the space of twelve years when he was successfully employed in America, has made him known, and rendered his character universally acceptable in all the British plantations. I am well assured that the people of New Jersey earnestly wish for and desire that Sir William Keith may be appointed their governor. But in case there is yet to be no division made of that province from New York, Sir William would gladly accept of a deputation, under any nobleman that may obtain the government of Barbados, and be content with the perquisite and goodwill of the people there, without any part of the salary paid by the Crown. I heartily wish that one of those employments or something else may be appointed for him, it is a great pity a man of his abilities should perish for want of bread when it is in the interest of both King and people to place him in the way of life. All of which is humbly submitted by Willm [William] Henderson'.
