Folio 74. Carolina Johnston, widow of Lieutenant-Colonel [John] Johnston of the 3rd Regiment of Guards, to the King. Petition in which she gives highlights of her late husband's 37 years of military service; says that on their marriage her husband for the reasons she gives laid out the whole of her fortune in purchasing a company in the Guards which post was the sole support of the family to the day of his death; on being passed over for promotion he sought to sell 'to the best advantage' but was refused, 'took his misfortunes so to heart that he fell into a lingering sickness' and died. She prays that in light of her late husband's service she be granted 'such an allowance for her future support besides the small pension she hopes for from his Majesty's Bounty on the Establishment of Officers' Widows' as shall be thought 'an equivalent for her loss and sufferings and sufficient for her keeping up that credit and character that her late husband and she have always lived in'. [Probate of John Johnston's will was granted to his creditors on 12 May 1726 PROB 11/609/108].
