Folio 102. Memorial of George Cowell, messenger. 'Mr Jelley [Jelly] the land waiter at Dover stopped me on my landing on the Strand at Dover (knowing me to be a messenger sent away my portmanteau wherein was my dispatches) and would not suffer me to follow till he had searched me under a beach nay even to my very skin which took up too much time to lose in my intended expedition, which I pray (as all my brother messengers do) may be remedied for the future. PS this was done the ? 3 of this month November'.
