Description

Folio 71. Abertus Casimirus Prince of Bazaeinsis in Russia infra Poland to the King [Charles II]. Letter. 'Since my arrival hither into the kingdom of England I have found not only your royal presence but tasted of your royal bounty to my much relief for the which (as infinitely obliged) I return you Sacred Majesty all humble thanks. But the same being spent my self indebted and altogether without accommodations, I did lately in a letter humbly present my grievance in part to your Sacred Majesty and therein desired that you would vouchsafe a supply thereof in such manner as you in your royal wisdom should think fit. But having no return from Your Majesty I have further presumed (by the hands of the noble Duke of Albemarle his Grace to represent my condition more at large: That by my misfortune of war I was by the Cossacks, Tatars and Muscovites (grand enemies to me) driven out of my dominions, my country 720 miles round about and 16 cities, 18 castles, 220 towns and villages devastated and myself wounded therein and thereby found to my considerable loss and unspeakable suffering and sorrow. Therefore Dread Sir be pleased to take me into your royal thoughts and consideration as I am a stranger and a prince born and once of command and hope (through God's assistance) to arrive in the same again'
