Examiners in Prize Causes and Actuaries [notaries]: Miscellaneous Papers 6A-6N:-

  • 6A: [not found];
  • 6B: Draft commisions for the War of Austrian Succesion, 1740s;
  • 6C: Standing Commissions:
    • 6C: Draft substitution of an actuary, 1778;
    • 6C1a-d, commission, printed instructions, manuscript standing interrogatories, issued for examiners at Gweek, Cornwall, 1779, and a very abbreviated aide-memoire of the standing interrogatories for the 'American Rebellion';
    • 6C2: i) printed standing interrogatories, and ii) printed instructions for commander of merchant ships with letters of marque, 1779;
    • 6C3: order of the judge to actuaries at the outports to allow the agent for prisoners of war to inspect the role d'equipage [muster roll] of every prize brought into port, 10 January 1799;
  • 6D: Copy of the Standing Commission for French prizes at Leghorn, 1800;
  • 6E: Instructions for examinations on Standing Interrogatories:-
    • 6E1: order that here shall be only 2 examiners and 1 actuary for each ship, and as to employment of interpreters for neutral ships, especially Russian, 1781;
    • 6E2: order that all ships' papers and examinations must be sent to the Registry and not to the captor's agent, 1798;
    • 6E3-7: manuscript draft, and four printed copies, of Instructions for Executing the Commission for the Examination of Witnesses upon the Standing Interrogatories in Prize Causes, 1810;
    • 6E8: form of an actuarial bill as settled, 1807;
    • 6E9: letter about the standing interrogatories, 1803.
  • 6F: Draft of a minute on issuing the Standing Commission, [1812];
  • 6G: Order for the insertion of a new commissioner into the Standing Commission for Falmouth, 1812;
  • 6H: i) Draft substitution of an actuary, 1794; ii) Form of institution of an actuary, 1797;
  • 6I: Form of an actuary's bill, 1810;
  • 6J: The actuary at Plymouth will not examine American vessels under the Danish Commission as advised, and is waiting for the American commission, October 1812;
  • 6K: Four certificates as to the suitability of Nicholas Dobree to be examiner for prize in Guernsey, November 1708;
  • 6L: Applications for appointments i) as actuaries in prize examinations, 1770-1799, and ii) as prize examiners, 1770-1776;
  • 6M: 'An Account of the present Standing Commissions about Prizes', a booklet recording and amending the commissioners to apply the standing interrogatories in England, Wales, Ireland, the American colonies, the West Indies, and various consulates in Europe, 1689-1698. This appears to be the earliest formal overview of the system of local commissioners, vice-admiralty courts and consular jurisdiction in prize.

  • 6N3-6N9: War of 1815: list of commissioners tucked in the back of N2, dated 1815.
