Description

Captured ship: Morning Star of Amsterdam, otherwise Morgenstern, otherwise Etoile de Matin (master John Jacobsen).

History: a Dutch merchant ship with a letter of marque, bound from Amsterdam for Curacao in May 1672, laden with Dutch West India Company cargo; taken on 5 June 1672 by HMS Nightingale (Henry Clarke commanding) and brought into Plymouth the next day.

Documents:-

Ship's Papers and Mail in Transit, numbered 1-59 by the court, 60-61 are two wrappers (several repeated numbers now given as a and b; nos 46 and 55 are missing).

Ships papers include crew list and agreement.

Mail in Transit:

  • many private letters written in Amsterdam in May 1672 for delivery to residents of Curacao, or to the crew of other ships expected there such as the slave traders Asia, Fenix and Salamander, which sailed in 1671 to Elmina, Guinea, and from there delivered enslaved people to Curacao in 1672, or the Vergilden Croon;
  • 12 copies of the Oprechte Haerlemse Courant of 11-19 May 1672 NS;
  • 5 copies of the Amsterdamsche Courant of 11-19 May 1672 NS;
  • 3 copies of the Extraordinaire Haerlemse Courant of 19-25 May 1672 NS.
