Description

Captured ship: Abraham's Sacrifice otherwise Offer van Abraham or Sacrificio de Abram (master Antonio Basso).

History: [a Genoese ship (450 tons), bound from Amsterdam to Cadiz, Malaga and Genoa (allegedly with the Duke of York's pass to go via the Channel, but instead went north-about round Scotland and Ireland, prepared to fight any British privateer), laden with cinnamon, pepper and other spices, logwood, ebony, brazil wood, Muscovy leather, whalebone, tar, iron, brass, pewter, lead (the lead taken from the prize John and Mary of Ipswich) and other goods; taken on 15 June 1667 about 50 leagues off the Black Rock of Galway by HMS Amity, HMS Eagle, HMS Falcon and HMS Guinea, and brought into Galway.

Exhibit 1: Muster and pay book (with various papers inside), titled 1665, Rollo delli Ufficiali e Marinari della Nave nominata Sacrifficio d'Abram, Genovese. Parchment-bound book, foliated and with an index of the crew. 1 September 1665 to 27 March 1666. Includes:

  • A: Abbreviated copy of the payments made to the crew. 1 September 1665 to 27 March 1666.
  • B: Another version of A.
  • C: Abbreviated copy of payments made to the crew. 28 March 1666 to 6 June 1666.
  • D: Account book titled 1666, Debito e Credito della Nave. Listing purchase of fresh food. 1665 to 1666.
  • E: Copy of an account titled 1665, LIbro di spese diverse fatte per la nave nominata Il Sacrificio de Abram, Capitano Antonio Basso, come per esso, fino a 6 Giugno 1666. Listing diverse expenses not included in the final accounts. 1665–1666.
  • F: [Copy of] account listing diverse expenses not included in the final accounts. 1665-1666.
  • G: List of payments for clothes and linen.
  • H: Loose accounts and papers.

Exhibit 2: Cargo manifest titled 1665, Manifesto della Nave Sacrifficio d’Abram, Genovese. Parchment-bound book. From Genoa to Cagliari (November 1665), chests containing diverse things, fabrics and food; from Cagliari to Genoa (and from there to Cadiz), wheat and chests (content unspecified); from Malaga (August 1666), wool, wine, salt and raisins.

Exhibit 4: Letter book. Containing some accounts (of money lent). December 1665 from Cagliari; February–June 1666 Cadiz; July-August 1666 Malaga; September 1666 the Texel; October 1666–April 1667 Amsterdam; May-June 1667 the Texel.

Exhibit 5: Account book (with various papers inside), containing diverse debts and expenditures, including gunpowder. Parchment-bound book. Includes:-

  • A: Account of the journey from Malaga to Texel (August–September 1666).
  • B: Loose accounts and papers.
  • C: Extract of the sentence of the Jury of Amsterdam in favour of the Dutch sailors and against Antonio Basso.
