Description

Captured ship: Hope of Amsterdam, otherwise Hoop (master Pieter Bartholomeeus Hases of Alkmaar)

History: a Dutch merchant ship, 80 lasts/160 tons, 10 guns, 20 men. Built in Holland c.1658-1659, owner Claude Blot, merchant of Amsterdam. Bound from Amsterdam to Madeira and the West Indies, laden with merchandise; taken in November 1664 [probably soon after 11 November: see SP 29/104 no. 78. James, Duke of York to Charles II, 11 November 1664] off the Isle of Wight by HMS Lily (Sir Thomas Knevett commanding), on the pretext of failing to strike or lower sail in salute to a British warship [but actually by order of James, Duke of York, the ship being thought to be worth £10,000 to £20,000: see SP 29/104 no. 78] and brought into Portsmouth.

Bundle 7 (7/1-7/18): mail to Guadeloupe (I) (letters in date order);

Bundle 8 (8/1-8/25): mail to Guadeloupe (II) (letters in date order);

Bundle 9 (9/1-9/32; 9/34): mail to St Kitts (I) (letters in date order); NB: item 9/33 removed 18/11/2021 to HCA 30/640/2. St Jacob [unknown master], from New Netherland.

Bundle 10 (10/1-10/40): mail to St Kitts (II) (letters in date order);

Bundle 11 (11/1-11/30): letters to Martinique, Antigua, Nevis, Montserrat, New Netherland, others, and unidentified;

Bundle 12 (12/1-12/10): letters and papers concerning other ships (I) Liefde otherwise Charity of Rotterdam (master Laurens de Rasiere) (12/1-12/7 on a thong)

Bundle 13 (13/1-13/14): letters and papers concerning other ships (II) St Anna of Hamburg (master Peter Tamm or Tam);

Bundle 14 (14/1-14/24): letters and papers concerning other ships (III):-
