Description

Captured ship: Santa Maria van Conceptie (master Lucas Pruijs).

History: a Dutch or Venetian ship, bound from Venice to Amsterdam via Messina and Cadiz, laden with luxury goods (glass, carpets, silk), alum and saltpetre, rice and linseed; having joined the homebound Dutch Smyrna convoy off Malaga, was attacked off Cadiz by British naval forces under Admiral Thomas Allin, 19 December 1664, taken by HMS Antelope (Robert Clarke commanding) and brought into Plymouth, 16 March 1665, by HMS Dover. [The ship was iIncorporated into the British Royal Navy as HMS Sancta Maria or Maria Sancta in September 1665.]

  • Bundle 10: Master's archive VI (numbered 10/1-10/43): other letters, by sender (surname B-Z; supplement); miscellaneous items, 1661-1664;
  • Bundle 11 : Master's archive VII (numbered 11/1-11/15): copy out-letters and notes;
  • Bundle 12: Mail in transit (numbered 12/1-12/19): letters for delivery;
  • Bundle 13: Papers concerning owners' previous ships (numbered 13/1-13/7, on 2 thongs): Koningin Elisabeth otherwise Keizerin (Queen Elizabeth or Empress), Sytge Sickis, master, 1661, and Reine Élisabeth (Queen Elizabeth), 1661-(1664);
  • Bundle 14: papers concerning other ships (numbered 14/1-14/5): Gioana or Joanne (master Albert Mart), Santa Agata or St Agatha (master Petro Simoni), Giustitia or Justice (master Jacomo Jacomo), Susanna (master Abrado di Petro), and Res Salamon or King Solomon (master Giovan Redolfo), 1664.
