Files which are routine, or which are duplicate material known to be better exemplified elsewhere, have been recommended for destruction. Some papers develop policy in their own right and others are special interest by virtue of being purposefully written or collated historical accounts.

Between around 1987 and its demise in 1993 the Property Service Agency (PSA)/Property Holdings PSA Services strove to amass material to support the writing of an Official History to supplement 'The History of the King's Works', which had taken the story up to 1963. The intention was to document the latter part of the history (1964-1993) to give earlier background and to expand some areas that had not been covered. However no such history was commissioned and the records in this series are those retrieved when the PSA Records Office was closed.

In 1962 the newly formed Ministry of Public Building and Works acquired the responsibility of monitoring the building industry as well as taking over the works departments from the War Office, Air Ministry and Admiralty. In 1970 the Ministry was absorbed into the Department of the Environment (DoE), although from 1972 most former Works functions were transferred to the largely autonomous Property Services Agency (PSA), which existed from 1972-1993.
