The House of Lords Appointments Commission is an advisory non-departmental public body to the Cabinet Office. It was established in May 2000 following a White paper (Cm 4183) to recommend people as life peers on a non-party political basis; and to vet for propriety all nominations for membership of the House of Lords, including those made by the political parties; and to scrutinise certain candidates added to the Honours Lists.
