The Treasury is responsible for the overall management of the economy. With support from Treasury officials, the Chancellor of the Exchequer advises and implements economic and financial functions in order to aid the running of the United Kingdom's economy. Norman Lamont first joined the Treasury in 1986 as Financial Secretary to the Treasury. He was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in1989 before succeeding John Major as the Chancellor of the Exchequer between 1990 and 1993. His period in office included the UK?s membership and exit from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM).
