Mediterranean Sea: Italy, South-West coast: Sicilia (Sicily): Siracusa (Syracuse). Entitled 'PLAN of the City and Harbour of SYRACUSE'. Includes one view: 'View of Syracuse from the Ruins of the Temple of Jupiter Olympus'. Chart shows coastline, hydrography, harbours, topography, land use, farms, roads, settlements, buildings including ancient sites, fortifications including Maniace Castle, military installations, land marks, remarks including four images (of both sides of two coins) of roman coins, and explanatory key. Manuscript watermark: 'J Whatman, 1816'. Latitude, longitude and magnetic variation (1815) referred to in remarks; North point with 8 point compass indicator. Scale: 5½ inches to 1 English mile or 2018 yards. Surveyed by Captain William Henry Smyth, Royal Navy. Annotated in ink: 'Plate 21', 'Knight of St Ferdinand and Merit' and 'The marshy ground must be better exprefsed [sic]' on front
