Description

The files in this prefix originate in the Local Government Re-Organisation Divisions of 1984 to 1986 which were set up to perform functions directly connected with the abolition of the Greater London Council and the Metropolitan Counties. The earliest themes are all directly related to this process. The prefix was later used for the broad range of local government policy and casework, probably because it was more suitable for computerised data handling systems being introduced (around 1990) than the LG prefix.

Division 1 dealt with bill management and major policy and policy on joint boards. Division 2 dealt with residuary bodies, staff and property matters.

By 1986 there were four divisions: 1 dealt with policy co-ordination; 2 with staffing issues and GLC/MCC specialist services; 3 with Residuary Bodies and London specific issues; and 4 dealt with property rights and liabilities and administration of transitional controls. In 1987 these functions were re-absorbed into the main Local Government Directorate, mainly into LG2
