Folios 95-96. James Jefferson, Wardrobe Court, Doctors' Commons on the application of Atkins. 'Lest by the prayer of the convict's petition being for mercy generally, and the justices' recommendation not stating their request which is that he should be transported during life or such term as the King shall please, His Majesty through his unbounded mercies grant free pardon, I shall take the liberty in duty to my Lord Duke to represent the inclination of the justices (grounded I presume on their present opinion that the convict had not an intention to murder, yet as His Majesty lost a subject by his hand, some though not capital punishment is requisite) whose commands I am honoured with in this affair. The gentleman being very desirous of knowing His Majesty's pleasure as speedily as possible, shall attend your commands tomorrow'.
