The Central Science Laboratory (CSL) was a public sector science organisation which specialised in the sciences underpinning agriculture for sustainable crop production and commodity protection, environmental management and conservation and in comprehensive analytical services across the area of food safety and quality. The CSL focussed on protecting environmental quality, developing sustainable land uses and safeguarding food chain safety. Its sciences were targeted closely on developing capabilities to anticipate and assess risks, and respond to emergencies in the environment and food chain. It was established in 1992 as an executive agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), later the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The Laboratory's heritage dated back to 1914 via various other predecessor scientific bodies and laboratories. On 1 April 2009, the CSL became part of the new Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA).
