The Highways Policy and Programmes Division was established in 1995 with responsibility for policy on the trunk road network and the national roads programme. In 1996 the Division was given sponsorship of the Highways Agency as well as financial oversight of the transport elements of the Government offices for the regions. In 1997 it was also given responsibility for post-inquiry decisions on roads schemes.
In 2000 the Division was absorbed into Roads Policy
