Folios 192-193. Henry, Bishop of Meath to James Payzant informing him of the resolution of the Irish Commons to grant £5,000 in aid of the Charter schools and also saying that he has seen Mr Mailly, 'a convert from the Church of Rome. Yet all such converts however they may be really sincere are so little acceptable to our people in the desk or pulpit, that though [they] have received the orders of the Church of Rome, we dare not allow them to take care of the cure of souls. We allow them to be school masters, and such a one Mr Mailly now is - teaching the French tongue to the Archbishop of Tuam's sons and daughters and perhaps others. A convert of the same kind I received in my own diocese, whom I actually at this time give a pension to and employ him in a little school near ? Cove in my diocese. But no clergyman will receive him as a curate. We want some provision by law for such men'.
