The Design Council started in 1944 under the Industry Act as the Council of Industrial Design before changing its name in the early 1970s. It was founded by Hugh Dalton, President of the Board of Trade in the wartime Government, and its objective was 'to promote by all practicable means the improvement of design in the products of British industry'.
The Design Council is now a non-departmental public body (from 2009 within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills) incorporated by Royal Charter and registered as a charity. Its function is 'to improve prosperity and well-being in the UK by demonstrating and promoting the vital role of design'. It is a campaigning organisation which works with partners in business, education and government to promote the effective use of good design. Its aim is to make businesses more competitive and public services more effective.
