Description

Folios 345-346: Westby Perceval, HMS Milford at the Mother Bank.

Reports his arrival at this anchorage the previous afternoon, 9 July, with the convoy from Malta and Gibralta. Left Malta 4 May, and Gibraltar 12 June. The Transports with the two Veteran Battalions embarked from Gibraltar are all there except the Hyperion, which had sprung a very bad leak on the 13th June off Cadiz, making 5 feet of water an hour so the pumps could hardly keep up - sent her into Cadiz with the Alexander Transport as escort. All the trade ships bound for Ireland and other ports on the coast parted company at their respective latitudes, except those noted in the convoy list which had parted company before, and the trade bound for the East parted company off the Isle of Wight the previous morning in 'thick and foggy' weather. Transmits a copy of his sailing orders from Rear Admirals Laugharne and Fleming, and a copy of his log since leaving Malta. Also copies of memorandums from Vice Admiral Sir Edward Pellew and Rear Admiral Laugharne to receive passengers and prisoners for passage to England. As requested by Pellew he has brought back the widow and family of the late Lt General Campbell, Lieutenant Governor of Gibraltar, in total 16 persons. He has brought home two asses, the property of HRH the Prince Regent and sent on board by General Maitland, to be landed at Portsmouth. Also notes that the Egina Marbles [sic] which had been embarked, were ordered to be landed again after the ship had left the port of Valletta, by orders arriving that morning by packet. Confirms that the prisoners named in the memorandum are on board, also a letter sent with the prisoner William Young at Gibraltar, from HMS Pompee, by order of Rear Admiral Flemming. Also on board is a sergeant of the German Chasseurs, under sentence of transportation, and a mariner, John Jones, under sentence of death for stabbing a seaman on 25 December. Reports that when he left Malta the town and port were free from 'suspicion of plague or disease of any nature'. During his voyage he spoke only to HMS Volontaire, Hon. Captain Waldegrave, on passage from Lisbon to Gibraltar, with a transport in tow laden with horses, and the merchant ship Trader of St Thomas's, on 2 July, part of the convoy with HMS Bareham from Jamaica, who had been 65 days at sea and was in great distress for want of provisions - Perceval supplied him with what was necessary, taking his bills for HM Govt and taking the ship into his own convoy.

Folio 347: Enclosure with folios 345-346: Sir Edward Pellew, Commander in Chief, HMS Caledonia, Genoa Mole, 30 May 1814, to Sir James Athol Wood, HMS Pompee. Order for Captain Sir James Wood to receive William Young as a prisoner aboard the Pompee, to be sent on to England by the first ship, with accompanying letter to the Admiralty.

Folio 348: Enclosure with folios 345-346: John Laugharne, HMS Trident at sea, 28 April 1814, to Westby Perceval, Captain, HMS Milford. William Thorne, of the Saracen, is sent from the Trident having been sentenced by court martial to 12 months solitary confinement, to be sent to England aboard the Milford.

Folio 349: Enclosure with folios 345-346: Sir Edward Pellew, Commander in Chief, HMS Caledonia, 26 April 1814, to Westby Perceval, Captain, HMS Milford. Requiring Perceval to receive the widow and family of the late Lt General Campbell for passage to England.

Folio 350: Enclosure with folios 345-346: John Laugharne, Rear Admiral, HMS Trident at Malta, 29 April 1814, to Westby Perceval, Captain, HMS Milford. Directing Perceval to receive aboard 'certain marbles' purchased by the Government, and two asses for HRH the Prince Regent.

Folio 351: Enclosure with folios 345-346: John Laugharne, Rear Admiral, HMS Trident at Malta, 2 May 1814, to Westby Perceval, Captain, HMS Milford. Directing that Perceval take under his protection the four Transports, Charlotte, Arethusa, Alexander, and Reward, and the Trade bound to the Westward, and putting to sea on Wednesday morning, 4th May, proceed to Gibraltar. There to take in convoy any other vessels wishing it, to return to the Downs. Having quitted Malta, he is to display the yellow flag, the convoy to do the same. He is to pay attention to the enclosed copy of an order of 23 January 1811, signed by the late Admiral Sir Charles Cotton. Also, for better protection of the convoy he is to take Captain John Miller Adye, in the Partridge, under his command as far as Gibraltar. Finally the Admiral requests a list of the convoy before Perceval leaves.

Folio 352: Enclosure with folios 345-346: Honourable Charles Fleming, Commander in Chief Western Coasts of Spain and Portugal, HMS San Juan, Gibraltar Bay, 12 June 1814, to Westby Perceval, Captain, HMS Milford. In addition to the order of 2 May, Perceval is to take under his protection the 8 Transports: Bedmer[?] 460, Regalia 599, Briton 93, Nautilus 406, Hyperion 203, Ancicrevn[?] 173, Lady M. Worth [?] 297, and the Rose 425. To proceed with them to Cadiz, and there to take charge of the Transports Sovereign, and Lady, and other vessels that are ready, and then without delay to Portsmouth.
