Description

Folios 288- 289: Sir Home Riggs Popham, HMS Stirling Castle.

Requests that the"R" for run be removed from the record of Mr. David Innes who, when a Midshipman on HMS Venerable in 1808, was left behind when the ship sailed but his absence was"more by accident than otherwise"

Folios 290-291: Enclosure with folios 288-289: W.R.Rider, Spring Garden Coffee House. 29 November 1810.

Letter in support of the application to have the"R" removed from the record of David Innes who"as soon as he began to reflect on the impropiety of his conduct" in absconding from HMS Venerable, the ship having sailed gave himself up to Captain Rider on HMS Challenger and served as Midshipman on that ship. [The Admiralty notes that the period of desertion from September 1809 - March 1810 is too long to have the"R" removed.]

Folio 292: Enclosure with folios 288-299: Captain Andrew King, HMS Royal George, St Helens 28 October 1811.

Captain King was the Commander of HMS Venerable from which David Innes absconded. In view of his previous good character on that ship and his subsequent good service on HMS Challenger and HMS Vantour King supports the application to have the"R" removed from the record of David Innes. [Same reply regarding the length of the desertion].
