Description

Folios 192-193: Betty Peers, Lostwithell. Mrs Peers says that her late husband [John Consett Peers], despite the severity of his long service, never asked for the back pension he was due, nor did she solicit for a continuance of his pension after his death, but now finds herself in real need. The printed obituary she encloses from the Naval Register describes Peers's extraordinary service with the Royal Navy, which lasted from his initial volunteer placement to HMS Boyne in 1774, to 1798, by which time he was a Commander. He had seen active service in in the American War of Independence, lost his arm, also suffered head wounds and frostbite, later served in the West Indies, where he contracted fever which later recurred. Many acts of kindness and philanthropy are also detailed.

Folio 194: Enclosure in folios 192-193. Betty Peers late husband's obituary (printed).
