The Independent Inquiry into Inequalities in Health was set up in July 1997 and was chaired by Sir Donald Acheson, with the following terms of reference: to moderate a Department of Health review of the latest available information on inequalities of Health, using data from the Office for National Statistics, the Department of Health and elsewhereto identify priority areas for future policy development to report to the Secretary of State for Health and publish a report to aid the development of a new strategy for health.
The review focused on three crucial areas: evaluation of policies likely to impact health, prioritisation of the health of families and children, and a reduction of income inequalities, improving the living standards of poor households.
