Description

Prisoner name: Cornelius Wood.

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey January Sessions 1825.

Crime: Rape of Mary Eyres.

Initial sentence: Death.

Annotated (Outcome): Considered at Report in Council 16 February 1825.

Petitioner(s): Two petitions. First petition from Cornelius Wood, the prisoner. Second petition from Cornelius Wood, the prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Innocent, youth, prosecutrix of immoral character.

Other papers: Letter from Newman Knowlys forwarding an anonymous letter.

Anonymous letter alleging that Mary Eyres is a strumpet and her testimony is not to be believed.

Letter from David Peden, a grocer, who served the prisoner on the night of the crime. His wife observed the prosecutrix behaving indecorously. Neither of them were called as witnesses.

Second anonymous letter re-iterating the testimony of the prosecutrix is not to be believed.

Letter from Newman Knowlys forwarding evidence from the trial of Cornelius Wood and depositions [not in item].

Anonymous letter apologising for not sending his application to Mr Peel but asking for humane consideration of Cornelius Wood.
