Description

Prisoner name: George Wilson.

Prisoner age: 23.

Prisoner occupation: Inn keeper and spirit merchant.

Court and date of trial: Northumberland Summer Assizes, July 1836.

Crime: Forgery of bill of exchange for £45 to defraud Sir Matthew White Ridley and Co, bankers in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Initial sentence: Six months imprisonment and transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Free pardon, 13 August 1861.

Petitioner(s): Two petitions from the prisoner, the first undersigned by 26 inhabitants of Hexham and endorsed 'numerous signatures detached'; the second undersigned by 103 inhabitants of Hexham.

Letter from M A Pearson of Bush Inn, Hexham, the prisoner's daughter, asking if her father will receive free passage to England. Endorsed: 'No - I should think not - he is not pardoned on the ground of innocence'.

Additional Information: Prisoner from Hexham. Held in Morpeth House of Correction then on hulks at Woolwich. Transported to Sydney, New South Wales. Prisoner's wife died on 1 June 1839 aged 24.
