Folios 227-228: Charles Phillips, Upnor, Rochester. He reports on the sea trial of his Artificial Horizon that took place aboard HM surveying vessel Protector. He reports shortcomings in the instrument and suggests remedies using coal tar and naptha. He suggests further observations be then made. He offers to arrange for the Admiralty to inspect the compass.
