Description

Folios 167-168: John Pascoe, Keyham Point, Devonport. He reports that a Charles McLean was taken prisoner of war by the Americans in the Jamestown seige in Chesapeake on 13 January 1813. He was on HMS Tartarus, then commanded by Captain Pascoe. Some of the Tartarus crew decided to enter the American service and he marked those men R [deserted]. He suggests that if after reading Mr McLean's enclosed statement, the Admiralty decides to remove the R [deserted] from his name, Captain Pascoe would not object.

Folios 169-170: Enclosure to folios 167-168: Commander George Smith, the Navy Office, 19 March 1829, to Captain John Pasco. He writes as Mr McLean did not return to the Service after he escaped from the American Prison his wages are forfeited.

Folio 171: Enclosure to folios 169-170: Charles McLean,1 Key Street, Liverpool, 15 March 1839. He encloses a certificate of his service [not enclosed] aboard HMS Tartarus provided by Captain Pasco. He boarded a prize called the Tamerlane with others but they were taken prisoner. He details his imprisonment and escape and passage on a Portuguese ship to Brazil. On his return to England then applied for his certificate of service, any prize money due him and any pay owing. He asks for this to be paid to him
