The Soviet Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was established in 1984 when the Eastern European and Soviet Department split into two separate departments. In 1992 the Soviet Department changed its name to the Eastern Department on the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

In 2006 the department changed its name to the Russia, South Caucasus and Central Asia Department.
