The East European Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was established in 1984 when the Eastern European and Soviet Department split into two separate departments

The East European Department changed its name to the Central European Department in 1993 after the lifting of the Iron Curtain. In 2000 the department changed its name to the Central and North West European Department.
