Description

County or diocese: various.

Grant: Alien subsidy, 1449 June 16 x July 16; Clerical tenth from exempt clergy, Canterbury province, 1450 July 17 or earlier.

Document type: Allocation of auditors.

Folios or pages: 16.

This small paper book would appear to record the allocation of auditors and the issue of writs during the twenty-ninth year of the reign of Henry VI, relating both to grants of taxation and other matters.

The book is relatively confused, and is clearly an internal Exchequer document designed to assist the auditing process rather than to record the precise details, and no figures or other financial details are included. It is arranged mainly by term, and has various headings relating to specific taxes and to other matters, such as escheators, coroners and customs collectors. Most entries simply give the county concerned, a reference to a collector or collectors, excheator, coroner, etc. (either their name or just the word 'collector'), and generally a reference to an auditor (Somer, Haddon, etc.). Other entries simply note that a given number of writs were sent to particular counties at a given point in that term.

The headings indicate that the book dates to 29 Henry VI, and was presumably compiled at various stages during that year. All of the taxes have been identified with a degree of certainty, but the book gives few specific details.

It is wholly legible.
