County or diocese: Royal households, nobility and official.
Grant: Two subsidies, 1589 Mar 17.
Document type: Constats. Includes names of individuals.
Folios or pages: 35.
This is a bundle of six paper documents, relating to the two subsidies granted to Elizabeth I in 1589, for the Royal Chamber, Household and Stable.
Four of the documents are numbered in sequence, in contemporary endorsements, and all except one contain constats, or extracts, mainly explicitly from the section of the Queen's Remembrancer's memoranda rolls containing writs directed to the barons of the Exchequer.
The documents mostly bear contemporary numbered foliation as well.
All the documents, except for the first, comprise dated warrants under the privy seal, allowing exemption from both subsidies of 1589 for various groups of royal servants, as follows: Document 1 (10 folios, folios 6v - 10 are blank): This paper book contains a copy or draft of an onus of account of the collectors of the second collection of the first subsidy of 1589, for the Royal Household.
Exempt individuals are listed and although the various sections for musicians, aliens, pensioners of the stable, etc., are numbered, these numbers do not appear to correspond with the numbers on the following copies of warrants allowing their exemption from the same tax grant.
The book notes payment by tallies between 12 February and 23 June 1591, therefore the document may have been created at some point after the latter date.
Document 2 (contemporary document number 1, 5 folios): original dated 6 November 1589, exempting various musicians in the Royal Chamber from payment towards the two subsidies of 1589.
The document has a heading to show that it was extracted from the relevant section of the memoranda roll for Hilary term, 1590.
Document 3 (contemporary document number 2, 8 folios): original dated 3 April 1590, exempting various yeomen of the Royal Chamber from payment towards the two subsidies of 1589.
This document has a heading to show that it was extracted from the relevant section of the memoranda roll for Easter term, 1590.
Document 4 (contemporary document number 3, 5 folios): original dated 23 July 1589, exempting various pensioner riders and grooms of the Royal Stable from payment towards the two subsidies of 1589.
This document has a heading to show that it was extracted from the relevant section of the memoranda roll for Michaelmas term, 1589.
Document 5 (3 folios): contemporary copy of the above.
Document 6 (contemporary document number 4, 4 folios): original dated 29 September 1589, exempting various aliens of the Royal Chamber from payment towards the two subsidies of 1589.
The documents are generally in fair condition and are legible; the final folios of some have suffered damage along the folds, are torn and require careful handling, since some folios are also brittle.
