Description

County or diocese: Royal households, nobility and official.

Grant: Five subsidies, 1628 June 16 x 29.

Document type: Certificates of exemption.

Folios or pages: 2.

This piece comprises two certificates relating to exemptions from taxation granted to servants of Queen Henrietta Maria.

The two certificates, both addressed to the collectors or receivers of subsidies in general, simply state that a certain individual had been exempted from payment of taxation by a privy seal letter. The first document, dated 30 January 1628/9, relates to Henry Bond, one of the grooms of the queen's chamber, while the second, dated 21 October 1629, was for Charles Gentall, her embroiderer.

No specific tax is mentioned in the documents, and the original privy seal letters were clearly intended to relate to all forms of taxation. However, the date would suggest that these particular certificates were issued in connection with one or all payments towards the five subsidies granted to Charles I in 1628.
