Description

County or diocese: Leicestershire.

Grant: Poll tax and graduated income tax, 1379 May 27.

Document type: Assessment (individuals). Includes names of individuals.

Folios or pages: 5.

This piece comprises a large collection of assessment rolls relating to the administration in the various hundreds of Leicestershire of the poll tax granted to Richard II in 1379. For ease of reference, the piece has been divided into fourteen parts; however, the relationship between the various parts is not always clear.

Part 14 of this piece is clearly an individual assessment for Gartree hundred for this 1379 poll tax. Several membranes are missing from the head of the roll. The original first membrane is one of the two documents in E 179/133/26 Part 12, and although it is not possible to be certain, the second membrane of that piece appears most likely.

A discussion of this document and its counterpart, with transcriptions, may be found in C. Fenwick |The Poll Taxes of 1377, 1379 and 1381|, Part 1. The present piece is indentified there as 'Gartree hundred, small roll'; the counterpart at E 179/133/26 Part 6 is described as 'Gartree hundred, large roll'.

Presumably this document was produced at or shortly after the date of the grant to which it relates.
