Description

County or diocese: Leicestershire.

Grant: Poll tax and graduated income tax, 1379 May 27.

Document type: Assessment (individuals). Includes names of individuals.

Folios or pages: 24.

This piece comprises a large collection of assessment rolls relating to the administration in the various hundreds of Leicestershire of the poll tax granted to Richard II in 1379. For ease of reference, the piece has been divided into fourteen parts; however, the relationship between the various parts is not always clear.

Part 6 of this piece is an individual assessment for Gartree hundred for this 1379 poll tax. It is the bulk of the assessment, but missing the first two or three membranes from the head of the roll. The first membrane is one of the two documents in E 179/133/26 Part 12, but it is not currently possible to tell which one, while the membrane which immediately preceded the present m 1 is currently at E 179/240/308 Part 2 m 145 (Ext 6/99 m 145).

A discussion of this document and its counterpart, with transcriptions, may be found in C. Fenwick |The Poll Taxes of 1377, 1379 and 1381| Part 1. The present piece is indentified by Fenwick as 'Gartree hundred, large roll'; the counterpart E 179/133/26 Part 12 is described as 'Gartree hundred, small roll'.

Presumably this document was produced at or shortly after the date of the grant to which it relates.
