Description

County or diocese: London.

Grant: Quarter of a clerical tenth on exempt collectors, Canter, 1449 July 28 or earlier; Quarter of a clerical tenth on exempt collectors, Canter, 1450 July 17 or earlier.

Document type: Account.

Folios or pages: 1.

This document is an account rendered at the Exchequer by the abbot and convent of Stratford [Langthorne] for the quarter of a tenth on all clergy exempted by royal letters from the collection of tenths granted to Henry VI by the clergy of the province of Canterbury in the convocation that began on 1 July 1449, and for another quarter of a tenth on all clergy exempted by royal letters from collection of tenths granted to Henry by the clergy of the province of Canterbury in the convocation that began on 17 July 1450. It seems to be an account rendered not as collectors of this tax but for the tax which they themselves were liable to pay for their possessions in this diocese. The account is undated, but was probably written around the time that payment of the second quarter of a tenth was due to be made, on 1 August 1450.

The document is almost wholly legible.
