Description

County or diocese: Hereford.

Grant: Two clerical tenths from Canterbury province, 1414 Oct 20.

Document type: Account.

Folios or pages: 2.

This is the account of the prior and convent of Wenlock, collectors of the first of two clerical tenths granted to Henry V in 1414, for the archdeaconry of Salop in the diocese of Hereford, by their attorney Thomas Lawney.

The document is in fair condition and is legible; it appears to have been filed on a thong, as there are holes for the thong towards the top left-hand corner.

It also appears to have been stitched to a piece of parchment to give it some support in the file, but the contemporary stitches have mostly broken, and only a few shreds of thread survive, and it is now attached to its parchment backing with modern stitches.

The section of the paper document which is not supported by the parchment has torn; it is fragile and requires careful handling until it has been conserved.

The document is undated, but refers to memoranda of Michaelmas term 1414 and Hilary term 1415, and was therefore probably created at some point early in 1415 or afterwards.

The document shows signs of having been enrolled, including an endorsement of enrolment.

The document is unusual in that it appears to be a duplicate on paper of the parchment account now at E 179/30/32, but includes a long section of benefices for which they were given an allowance on their account.
