Folios 511-515.
To: The Local Government Act Office.
From: Messrs Radcliffe and Layton, Clerks to the Local Board of West Derby [Lancashire].
Subject Matter: Letter in reply to a complaint from E F Steel of a nuisance arising from Tue Brook.
They submit that the Local Board is currently undertaking a comprehensive system of drainage across the District and obtained a temporary sewage outfall in August 1868. They state that the owners of the houses have been served with notices requiring them to construct drains into the Local Board's main sewer, and in many cases the Local Board has carried out the works and intends to recover the cost from the owners. They note, however, that there are several hundred houses that currently drain into the brook so the work will take some time.
They add that the Local Board put large amounts of disinfectant into the brook during hot weather and have increased their Engineer's staff to ensure the works are completed with as little delay as possible.
They enclose copies of 'several of the many resolutions passed by the Board and its Committees on the subject' [folios 513-515] which they hope show that the Board are doing all in their power to remove the nuisance.
