The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005 to regulate commercial gambling in Great Britain. The Commission was established on 1 October 2005 to replace the Gaming Board for Great Britain, and the Commission's powers under the Act came into force on 1 September 2007.
The Commission exists as an independent Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It regulates betting, bingo, casinos, gaming machines, lotteries and remote gambling, and also provides independent advice to both central and local government on gambling in Britain. It is not responsible for regulating spread betting or the National Lottery.
