The Advisory Committee on the Government Art Collection is an Advisory Non-Departmental Public Body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). It was first established in 1935 but after periods in abeyance it was last re-constituted in 1956 and since then has been in continuous existence. The Committee does not have a statutory basis.
The Government Art Collection (GAC) has been developed over the past 100 years, and contains works of art by a wide range of artists ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day which together aim to promote British artistic life and heritage. Works of art from the Collection are selected and placed, to be displayed in major British Government buildings in the UK and around the world, including official Residences and Embassy buildings. It is the role of the Advisory Committee to advise on the acquisition and commissioning of works of art for the Collection, and on the policy and stewardship of the Collection, in order to meet the objectives of DCMS.
