Folio 1: Title page.

Folio 2: Explanatory note. During the period of the War, papers of a confidential nature in the office of the C-in-C Home Fleet were filed in Packs (numbered separately from the non-confidential records) in a Series 001 to 0042 inclusive. Copies of relevant telegrams were filed in these packs, but a complete set of all telegrams was also maintained. The secret packs were re-arranged by the Grand Fleet secretarial staff in February 1919, when papers considered unimportant were removed and destroyed, and the remainder re-indexed. They were received in this form by the Historical Section in April 1920, and bound as received, in a series of Volumes. The 1919 index will be found in the first volume (see ADM 137/1881) and extracts from these have been inserted in each succeeding volume. This volume is the 30th of the series.

Folios 11-17: Covering letter 72/028, 6 April 1915 from Rear Admiral Dudley Rawson Stratford de Chair to C-in-C Grand Fleet and letter No 72/028, 6 April 1915 from Rear Admiral de Chair to Admiralty concerning suitability of Loch Roag as base. Folio 17 gives table showing steaming capacity, coal and water storage etc required for each vessel of the Squadron.

Folio 18: Letter No 705/HF0030, 16 April 1915. Admiral JR Jellicoe to Admiralty. Swarbacks Minn far more suitable than Loch Roag.

Folio 19: Admiralty to C-in-C Home Fleets. Rear Admiral William B Fawchner (retired) appointed to HMS Cyclops as Senior Naval Officer at Swarbacks Minn. Folios 320-321: Letter 039, 7 June 1915 from Rear Admiral Dudley Rawson Stratford de Chair to Admiralty enclosing chartlet of Shetland Isles with proposed boom defences for Swarbacks Minn.

Folio 22: Telegram from Rear Admiral Swarbacks Minn to Admiral Longhope, 20 July 1915. Boom placed and gate operating.

Folios 23-26: Covering letter No 336, 14 June 1915 (paper M 04566/15) from Admiralty to C-in-C Home Fleets with letter 14 June 1915 to C-in-C Devonport. HMS Gibraltar to be depot ship at Swarbacks Minn. Folio 26 is a detailed Scheme of Complement for HMS Gibraltar Folio 27: Letter G.02921/15/19783, 9 July 1915 from Admiralty to C-in-C Home Fleets. Preparation of HMS Gibraltar.

Folios 28-31: Covering letter 26 July 1915 (paper M 05374/15) from Admiralty to Admiral Commanding Orkneys and Shetlands with two letters 26 July 1915 to C-in-C Devonport. Arrangements for Swarbacks Minn as base.

Folios 39-40: Covering letter NID3921, 24 May 1915 from Director Naval Intelligence to C-in-C Home Fleet. Police report No C13/134, 14 May 1915 from Superintendent James Irving. Information received via a Mr Lunn ship chandler, Blyth on German submarine base being set up in Northern Norway.

Folios 41-42: Letter No 1094/HF016, 3 June 1915 from Admiral JR Jellicoe to Admiralty. German submarine base in Northern Norway and use of Russian destroyers Folios 43-44: Letter No 392, 2 July 1915 (paper M.04328) Admiralty to C-in-C Home Fleets. German submarine base in Northern Norway and use of Russian destroyers.

Folios 45-52: Telegrams concerning German use of Bear Island as submarine base and arrangements for British ship/squadron to investigate.

Folios 53-57: Admiralty memorandum HF0016/6, 26 July 1915. Operation “M”. Statement of objectives, operational orders etc with enclosure of extract from Naval Prize Manual for His Majesty’s Fleet stating Powers of Officer in Command. Folio 58: Letter 1528/HF0016, 27 July 1915. Admiral JR Jellicoe to Admiralty. Operation “M”. Trawlers Mafeking and Arley left Scapa Flow 27 July 1915. Folios 59-73: Enclosure 2 to submission No 1800/HF0016, 27 August 1915. Letter 26 August 1915 from Captain A Bromley, HMS Columbella to C-in-C Grand Fleet. Report of proceeding to Bear Island including short report titled “Report on coal workings at Advent Bay.”

Folios 74-78: Sub-enclosure to submission No 1800/HF0016, 27 August 1915. Copy of wireless log, HMS Columbella 31 July to 15 August 1915.

Folio 79: Handwritten note (in Russian?) for supply of coal at Alexandervosk.
