Government social research informs the development, implementation and evaluation of a wide range of government policies and plays a crucial role in evidence-based policy making.
The Government Social Research Service (GSR) exists to: provide government with objective, reliable, relevant and timely social research; support the development, implementation, review and evaluation of policy and delivery; and ensure policy debate is informed by the best research evidence and thinking from the social sciences. Members of the Government Social Research service are based in government departments and the Service is led by the Chief Government Social Scientist, who is supported by the Government Social Research Unit (GSRU). The team works in partnership with several cross-government committees of social researchers.
The content of the GSR pages on this website is managed by the Government Social Research Unit, based in HM Treasury.
