Description

Prisoner name: William Smale.

Prisoner age: 21.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court held on 2 April 1838.

Crime: Larceny - stealing trunks with their contents, the property of Colonel Wilson from a waggon on the Romford Turnpike Road.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character not known.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from prisoner; one signed by 14 inhabitants and householders, second signed by 10 others; and third signed by five inhabitants and householders.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Unaware items had been stolen; led astray by others; first offence; family dependent on his wages; good character; prosecutor recommends mercy; good conduct on hulk.
