Description

Prisoner name: Alexander Scott.

Prisoner age: Joiner or car painter in Kelso.

Court and date of trial: Roxburgh Sheriffs Courts held on 16 April 1838.

Crime: Theft of £20 bank note.

Initial sentence: Six months imprisonment.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Family dependent on his wages; ill health; innocent of crime; good character.

Other papers: Character references: from John David, Minister of Betholem House, and signed by 9 other elders; from Robert Young; from John Tait and signed by eight other neighbours; signed by 19 inhabitants of Kelso; signed by six farmers and other inhabitants in the village of Lempitlaw; from John Bulman, carpenter; signed by 30 sawing men of Kelso; from John [Bortell], Surveyor at Kelso.

Letter from [J] Elliot enclosing application for the case to be transmitted to the Crown Council in Edinburgh.

Letter from William Oliver Rutherford, Sheriff of Roxburghshire, enclosing copy of the Evidence taken at the trial, together with Declarations of the three prisoners and their pleas and the Verdict of the Jury.
