Description

Prisoner name: John Kinnear.

Prisoner age: 58.

Court and date of trial: Liverpool Assizes held in 1838.

Crime: Forgery.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Annotated (Outcome): Nil.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from Georgina Kinnear, wife; one signed by Sir Astley Cooper.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Age; ill health - disease of the spine and slight paralysis; respectable connections; family dependent on his wages; severity of treatment would shorten his days; wife and daughters pray to emigrate to New South Wales with him.

Other papers: Note, 28 December 1821 concerning the Mersey Banking Company which was established by prisoner and John Richardson.

Letter, 1 May 1838, from Sir R Adair concerning bond for transporting prisoner and family for life.

Letter, 1 May 1838, from Lord Sandon transmitting a petition from wife and also seeking permission for them to travel with prisoner to New South Wales.

Letter, 28 May 1838, from Sir R Adair transmitting petition from Mrs Kinnear.

Letter, 30 June 1838, from J Stephen, Downing Street, transmitting memorial from Mrs Kinnear for consideration by Lord John Russell.

Note [undated] from Sir Robert Adair stating that prisoner should be allowed to transport himself under bond.
